Are you looking for the ultimate guide to Cape Reinga? Look no further! This guide will provide a comprehensive overview of the 7 best things to see and do in the most northerly region of New Zealand!

From exploring the beautiful sandy beaches, to taking in breathtaking views of Ninety Mile Beach, there are plenty of activities that will keep you entertained during your visit.

Whether it’s hiking along picturesque beaches, hurtling down sand dunes, enjoying a peaceful picnic at remote bays, or simply admiring the natural beauty around you, Cape Reinga has something for everyone. So get ready for an adventure-filled trip and enjoy all that this majestic location has to offer!

7 Unique Things To See & Do in Cape Reinga.

Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Rēinga) is a stunning destination in the North Island of New Zealand and offers plenty of activities to keep visitors entertained.

Literally meaning “the leaping-off place”, in Māori culture this region is where the spirits of the dead leave mainland Aotearoa and begin their journey back to the ancestral homeland, Hawaiki.

The sparsely populated nature of the northernmost part of Aotearoa makes it one of the most peaceful and laid back destinations in the country and full of unique experiences.

Here are 7 of the best things to see and do to make the most of your trip!

1 – Visit the Lighthouse (& stand at the northernmost accessible point in NZ)!

The lighthouse at the Cape in the early morning light.

Make sure you don’t miss visiting the Cape Reinga Lighthouse. This historic structure has been standing proudly at the tip of the North Island since 1941 and provides stunning views of the coastline and oceans beyond.

Although it’s not possible to explore inside the lighthouse, there’s plenty to admire from the viewpoint.

Jutting out of rocks just below the lighthouse is an ancient pōhutukawa tree, estimated to be over 800 years old. This tree marks the place where Māori spirits leap off the mainland on the way to their ancestral homeland, Hawaiki.

From the lighthouse, look towards the place where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean collide as they meet just to the north of New Zealand – you may even see great spouts of water as well as the churning currents!

On a clear day, keep your eyes peeled for the Three Kings Island on the horizon.

The Three Kings Islands, just visible on the distant horizon.

The 800m / 0.5mi walk to the lighthouse takes just 10 minutes. It’s a gradual uphill climb back to the carpark. There’s plenty of parking and a toilet block at the carpark, but there are no rubbish bins so take all your rubbish with you.

It’s culturally insensitive to eat at the Cape, so please bring water only with you on your walk and stop instead at Taputupotu Bay for something to eat (see more on this below).

2 – Drive down Ninety Mile Beach – NZ’s world-famous beach road!

car driving down ninety mile beach
Driving down Ninety Mile Beach is a rite of passage in this region.

Ninety Mile Beach is one of New Zealand’s most iconic beaches, but contrary to it’s confusing name it actually only stretches 55 miles (88 kilometres) from Scott Point in the north to Ahipara in the south.

One of the most incredible experiences you can have on Ninety Mile Beach is driving along part of it – it’s an officially recognised highway!

Normal road rules apply (such as wearing seatbelts and sticking to a speed limit), and the drive is only possible at low tide, and ideally only by 4 wheel drive vehicles.

The safest (and longest) way to experience driving along the beach is to hop on one of the many coach tours departing from Kaitaia or Paihia, but you can also drive yourself (by following some basic rules).

Tips for Driving on Ninety Mile Beach

Plenty of tourist vehicles get stuck in deep sand every year on the beach, so keep your wits about you and be safe as this region is remote and help might be far away.

  • Preferably, take only a 4 wheel drive vehicle to minimise the risk of getting stuck.
  • Only drive on the beach within two hours of low tide. See Ninety Mile Beach high/low tide times here.
  • Drive only on the hard sand and avoid the soft sand. If the access ramp to the beach is covered in soft sand, do not attempt to access unless by 4 wheel drive.
  • Don’t be tempted to drive too far. The further you go from the access ramp, the more isolated you’ll be from help if you need it.
  • Only access the beach from the suggested list of access points below as these are the safest and most popular on-ramps.

⚠ IMPORTANT NOTE
Rental car / campervan companies prohibit driving their vehicles on Ninety Mile Beach. Your insurance will be void if you breach this rule.

Suggested Access Points for Ninety Mile Beach

There are three main points of tourist access to Ninety Mile Beach. I’ve listed these below in order of my personal preference:

Access Point 1 – Hukatere Road

This is probably the easiest and safest place to access the beach, and one which I have done myself.

Take the turning onto Whalers Road at Pukenui and follow your nose for approximately 9.5kms / 15 mins. The last 5kms / 10 mins of this road is unsealed, but still good enough for most cars to drive down.

The on-ramp is wide and usually has hard enough sand to drive on (although cars have gotten stuck here from time to time). It’s my personal choice because it’s very remote so you can really get a sense of how massive and isolated the beach is.

Access Point 2 – Waipapakauri

The second most popular place to access the beach is at Waipapakauri.

Take the left hand turning onto W Coast Road just north of Waipapakauri on State Highway 1, and follow the road all the way to the beach.

It’s a sealed road the entire way and there’s a small settlement of holiday homes right on the beach edge meaning there will always be someone around.

However, the access point to the beach is much narrower, and in my experience the sand is much softer here increasing the risk of your car becoming stuck before you even get to drive on the beach.

Access Point 3 – Te Paki

The third and final access point to the beach is at Te Paki and is only suitable for 4 wheel drive vehicles as it involves driving down the Te Paki stream.

For that reason I don’t recommend it unless you have a 4 wheel drive.

Bonus Access point

One final place you may choose to take your normal car onto Ninety Mile Beach is at Ahipara. The southern reaches of the beach tend to have the hardest sand and are the easiest to access.

A great place is the on-ramp just opposite 209 Foreshore Road just outside Shipwreck Bay (harder sand to the high tide line), but you can also get onto the beach at the end of Kaka St (the sand is much softer here).

3 – Sandboard down the Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes on Ninety Mile Beach

view of tasman sea from giant sand dunes at te paki
Even with a wide lens, it’s impossible to capture the scope of the dunes!

For an adrenaline-filled experience, make sure to include an experience sand boarding the Giant Te Paki sand dunes on your trip to the Cape. These shifting sand dunes can reach over 150m high, making them the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere.

The best way to experience the dunes is to take a ride straight down them on a sandboard! This activity has been a Northland favourite since ages ago (I first did it in 1995!) and is a must-do experience on your visit to this region.

You can self-drive to the Te Paki Sand Dunes, otherwise many of the coach tours to the Cape region stop off at the dunes.

Don’t bring a board with you. Normal body boards don’t slide very well down the sand. If you’re on a coach then your board will be included, but if you’re self-driving you can hire a special sand board for $15 from Ahikaa Adventures at the carpark (cash or internet bank transfers from NZ bank account only).

Climbing up the Giant Te Paki Sand Dunes.
Climbing up the dunes is hard and hot work, even early in the morning!

It’s only a few minutes’ walk from the carpark to the first dunes and you need to cross the shallow Te Paki stream first.

The dunes cover a huge area, and you could easily spend 2-3 hours exploring them. It will take at least 30-45 minutes to walk to the dunes which have a good view of the ocean.

You may have to walk up to an hour to find a good dune to sandboard down, and remember there’s no shade and the steep and deep sand is very tiring to walk on!

The sand on the dunes can be incredibly hot, and the sun is strong so make sure to bring some good footwear, long layers, a hat, sunglasses, plenty of sunscreen and water.

4 – Hike Part of the Te Paki Coastal Track

View of Te Werahi Beach from the start of the Te Paki Coastal Track.

If New Zealand is known for anything, it’s the amazing walking tracks all over the country that take you to spectacularly scenic locations. The Te Paki Coastal Track is no exception!

This 48 km / 30 mi track officially starts in Kapowairua (Spirits Bay) and ends at Te Paki Stream (where the giant dunes are), passing the famous lighthouse on the way.

But you don’t have to walk the full track to enjoy its beauty. In fact, one of the most scenic sections is between Cape Reinga and Cape Maria van Diemen, along Te Werahi Beach. Read about this section of the track from Day 1 of my Te Araroa adventure.

🤓 FUN FACT!
This part of the Te Paki Coastal Walkway also forms the first part of Te Araroa, New Zealand’s 3,000 km / 1,860 mi long distance hiking trail. Find out more about Te Araroa here.

The track down to the end of Te Werahi Beach (the Te Werahi Beach Track) is 3km / 1.8 mi long and will take about 1 hour (2 hours return).

If you have a bit of extra time, continue over Herangi Hill and take the short detour to Cape Maria van Diemen, the westernmost point of New Zealand’s North Island.

Continue back to the track and through a small scrub section before you get to a junction with the Twilight / Te Werahi Beach Loop track. Take a left hand turning here and follow the track back to the main road where you can walk along the road to the Cape Reinga carpark, or take another detour left to rejoin Te Werahi Beach.

🔥 HOT TIP 🔥
If you’re planning to hike along Te Werahi beach, make sure to check the tide times. There’s a small rocky bluff at the northernmost end of the beach which is impassable at high tide. You need to plan your trip so that you are crossing these rocks within 2 hours of low tide. Find applicable tide times here.

5 – Have a Picnic (or breakfast) at Taputupotu Bay

White sand beach at Taputupotu Bay.
White sand and azure ocean at Taputupotu Bay.

Because eating is prohibited at the Cape itself, a great place to stop for a bite to eat whilst you admire the amazing scenery and peacefulness of this region is Taputupotu Bay.

The flat grassy area adjoining the beach is New Zealand’s most northerly campsite (operated by the Department of Conservation in conjunction with the local tribe Ngati Kūri), so if you feel inclined this is a great place to camp for the night and tick off the bucket list.

It costs $16 per adult per night to stay at this campsite ($8 per child 5-17 years per night), and you must book online first. You can also call  0800 TE PAKI (0800 837 254) or email campgrounds@ngatikuri.iwi.nz.

The lagoon here is suitable for both swimming and kayaking and there are picnic benches for you to enjoy your lunch as you gaze out at the view.

There are also two or three sets of decent (flushing) toilets at the campsite and cold showers. You may wish to bring your own toilet paper just in case.

You can also join part of the Te Paki Coastal track here for a 5 km / 3 mi walk to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse (3 hours one-way)

6 – Camp at Spirit’s Bay

Another iconic and scenic place to stop in the region is Spirit’s Bay. Sitting about half way between Cape Reinga and North Cape, Spirits Bay is a sweeping curve of white sand beaches on the northernmost coastline of New Zealand.

Spirit’s Bay is a fantastic place for fishing, surfing and also walking, marking the official start/end point of the Te Paki Coastal Track multi-day walk.

Again, the campsite at Spirit’s Bay must also be booked online (you can do this when you arrive) through the same website or contact number/email above as for Taputupotu Bay. The price is the same.

7 – Visit Ahipara & Shipwreck Bay

Sunrise at Ahipara from close to Shipwreck Bay.

You’ve seen the top of Ninety Mile Beach, now make your way down the Aupouri Peninsula to its southern terminus at Ahipara!

This quaint little town, one of the northernmost in New Zealand, hosts some of the best sunsets in the southern hemisphere. They are best viewed with a dusk stroll (or horseback ride!) along any part of the beach at Ahipara Bay.

Ahipara was popular in colonial times as a kauri gum digging location. Its heyday was in the 1920s and 1930s when it became a centre for kauri gum diggers, and it was one of the last places in New Zealand where kauri gum was dug or mined on a large scale.

Surfing is a popular pasttime in Ahipara, which has a world-class left hand break over sand. Arise early or stroll along the beach close to dusk to see surfers from all over the world trying their hand in the waves.

If you’re adventurous, have a go yourself by hiring a surfboard or body (‘boogie’) board whilst in Ahipara. This is possible from some of the motels, hostels and lodges in Ahipara (such as the Endless Summer lodge, where you can hire a surfboard for $20). Call ahead to confirm.

Strolling along Ninety Mile Beach at sunset in Ahipara.
Southern end of Ninety Mile Beach – Ahipara surf destination.

Ahipara (and Ninety Mile Beach in general) is also famed for its fishing and the sought-after shellfish tuatua. This asymmetrical shell of the clam family is a popular catch all along Ninety Mile Beach and (I’m told) is especially tasty in tuatua fritters.

I’m no expert on shellfish, so use Up North’s guide to find out more about how to catch and cook tuatua.

The western reaches of Ahipara are marked by Shipwreck Bay, where historic shipwrecks of European explorer vessels came to rest in the notoriously turbulent western coastal waters and can still be seen today at low tide.

This was the highlight of our time in North Island. I was hesitant to book such an costly tour, but it was worth every penny… Flying at around 1500ft, it allows you to see so much and appreciate the beauty, diversity and remoteness of the top of the North Island… An unexpected surprise was flying right over the Bay of Islands too… I cannot endorse this more highly as such a unique and worthwhile opportunity to see the top of NZ.

Getting to Cape Reinga.

Cape Reinga can be accessed by car, tour bus or scenic flight.

🚗 Private or Rental Car

Traveling to the Cape with your own car or a rental car is the most flexible way to explore the Far North region. With your own vehicle, you’ll have more flexibility in terms of where and when you go, as well as what activities you participate in along the way (and how much time you spend at the sights).

Renting a car from Auckland Airport will be the easiest option for most international travellers, but there are plenty of other centres to collect a car around New Zealand, including Whangarei if you’re already in Northland.

The Cape is a six hour drive from Auckland, so to make the most of your trip I recommend staying overnight at one of the other centres in the region such as Whangarei (3hr50m), Paihia (3hr), Kerikeri (2hr45m) or Kaitaia (1.5hr).

[ Coming Soon – 7 Day Northland Driving Itinerary ]

🚌 Scenic Tour Bus

Traveling to the Cape by scenic tour bus is the most popular option for tourists, as it is the only way to explore the destination on foot other than by private vehicle.

Most tour buses depart from the Bay of Islands (Paihia & Kerikeri) but there are also some great services that depart from Kaitaia.

I recommend checking out Fullers Great Sights, Dune Rider and the Harrisons Cape Runner for all the options.

🚁 Scenic Flight

Drones are not allowed at the Cape, so a scenic flight over the promontory and its iconic lighthouse is a great way to get some really unique photographs and perspective of the coastline and the meeting of the oceans. Plus, you’ll also experience the beauty of the rest of the Far North district from the air as you make your way there.

One of the only options is Salt Air’s scenic Half Day Fly/Drive tour which departs from Paihia. This tour offers the best of both worlds, as it also drops you on land just south of the Cape for a 2.5 hour minibus tour of some of the northern bays, Ninety Mile Beach and the Te Paki sand dunes.

You could also check out Heletranz’s Cape Reinga flying tour (ex Auckland) which is jam packed with all of the Northland highlights including the Cape Brett lighthouse, Karikari Peninsula and a guided walking tour of Giant Kauri at Waipoua forest.

Cape Reinga Accommodation.

For those looking to explore the stunning sights of this region, there are a variety of accommodation options available all over the Far North.

From budget hostels and campgrounds, to motels and all-inclusive hotels, visitors can find something that fits their needs for an enjoyable stay in this spectacular location.

⚠ IMPORTANT NOTE
If you’re heading to NZ from overseas you should know that the locals will give you a lot of bad blood for defecating anywhere other than a toilet. This is due to the spoilage of pristine natural environments over the last few decades by visitors who haven’t been respectful. Respect the locals and the environment by always using a toilet or following Leave No Trace principles.

Cape Reinga FAQs.

Cape Reinga is an iconic destination in New Zealand, attracting visitors from all over the world. It’s considered to be one of the most beautiful and unique places on earth.

To help you make the most of your time here, I’ve compiled a few frequently asked questions about the region.

What is special about Cape Reinga?

Cape Reinga is the spiritual home of the Māori people, and is the furthest north you can drive in New Zealand. It’s known for its breathtaking views across the confluence of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean (you can actually see the meeting point!). On one side of the Cape you can see the Cape Maria van Diemen peninsula and Herangi Hill’s white sand dunes, whilst on the other you can witness spectacular sunsets along the northern coastline out to North Cape. The Cape’s popular lighthouse is also the starting point of Te Araroa – New Zealand’s “Long Pathway”. Visitors often take to this spot to reflect upon life’s journey or celebrate new beginnings as they look out over Aotearoa – The Land of The Long White Cloud.

Is Cape Reinga the end of the world?

No, the Cape is not the end of the world. However, it is a symbolic place at the very northern tip of New Zealand’s North Island that marks the spot where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet – so it could be called “the end of New Zealand”. Māori believe spirits leave this point to return to their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki. Many visitors report a palpable spirituality to this special place and enjoy experiencing this important aspect of Aotearoa’s cultural heritage.

Can you eat at Cape Reinga?

No, you can’t eat food at the Cape due to the area being tapu (sacred) to Māori. However, you can drink water from bottles. If you want to pack a picnic for your trip, the best place to enjoy it is at nearby Tapotupotu Bay, just 5 kilometres from the Cape. Make sure to pack all your rubbish out with you – there are no rubbish bins at these sites. There are no restaurants or food supplies within 94 kilometres of the Cape. The nearest restaurants, takeaways and supermarkets are in Kaitaia and Ahipara (~100 kilometres & 1.5 hours drive).

What is the weather like at Cape Reinga?

The region is part of New Zealand’s ‘Winterless North’, meaning that it generally enjoys mild, pleasant weather all year round. It rarely gets too hot or too cold and temperatures usually stay relatively mild during the day. Rainfall is frequent but heavy rain and extreme weather conditions are rare here. That being said, in La Niña seasons this area of NZ is prone to flooding and wild weather. It’s also possible for tropical cyclones to batter this part of the country from time to time, so make sure to check Metservice weather alerts before heading to this region.

Final Thoughts: Things To Do In Cape Reinga.

Cape Reinga is an iconic destination in New Zealand, offering visitors a unique and spiritual experience at a place which is important to Māori and Pākeha alike.

From the meeting point of two oceans to its bright white sand dunes at Te Paki, it’s truly one of the most beautiful places on earth and a New Zealand must-do.

This guide has given you all the information you need to make your trip memorable, from what to see and do, to the best places to stay for any budget.

Now all you have to do is get out there and experience it!

I’ve done all the hard work and researched all of the different lakeside accommodation in Taupō options so that you don’t have to. Below is a comprehensive list of all the hotels and motels in Taupō which can be considered ‘lakefront’ (i.e. you don’t need to cross a road or walk very far to get to the lake). I’ve organised them by budget, and also included my top picks from each category.

So grab a cuppa and let’s get started!

All Lakeside Accommodation in Taupō – All The Spots To Choose From For Your Stay!

Following is a comprehensive list of all the hotels and motels in Taupō which are right on the lakefront. I’ve organised them first by budget, but then by facilities and what you’re looking for (i.e. family-friendly stays).

Since this is a post about ‘lakeside’ or ‘lakefront’ accommodation in Taupō, I’ve only included the ones which are literally right on the lakefront. But for good measure, I’ve thrown in a few at the end of this list which are also pretty darn close (within a 5 minute walk).

Lakeside Accommodation in Taupō for Budget Travellers (up to NZD150 per night)

For budget travellers looking for a lakeside stay in Taupō, there are only a handful of options to choose from, largely due to the fact that the prime lakeside property is occupied predominantly by mid-range and luxury hotels.

It is a highly rated and well-liked destination for travellers, and with only a handful of rooms you know you’ll be well looked after. The best part about this accommodation (and the main reason I’ve chosen it as my top pick!) is that it’s also dog-friendly, so you can bring your four-legged friend along with you!

Why Stay Lakeside in Taupō?

If you’ve never been to Taupō before, you may not know that the ‘main route’ through town from north to south takes you directly alongside the shores of the mighty Lake Taupō.

Lake Terrace runs from the Waikato River outlet at the western edges of the CBD, all the way along the outer edge of Tapuaeharuru Bay to the roundabout with State Highway 1 at Wharewaka. That’s 6.5 kilometres of scenic road, with exactly 3.5 kilometres of that being directly lakeside!

Conveniently, Lake Terrace is actually where the highest concentration of hotels and motels are in Taupō, and it’s been that way since ages ago. Most of the options I mention in this article have been in town for many decades, and have a long history of guest satisfaction to go along with them.

Staying at lakeside accommodation in Taupō is a real must-do during your visit. After all, you’re here to see and experience the lake and all it has to offer, so why not get up close and personal?!. At lakefront Taupō accommodation you’ll have direct access (less than 50 metres) to the Lion’s Walk (the lakefront walking path that runs north to south) and the lake itself, where you can swim, walk, bike ride, or even enjoy a coffee and something to eat.

Lakeside Things to Do in Taupō

Lake Taupō Hole in One Challenge

The Taupō Hole in One Challenge is a fun way to test your skills on the waters of Lake Taupō. The challenge requires you to make an exact hole-in-one shot from the tee deck, 102 metres across the lake and straight into the designated floating green. Contestants of all levels are sure to be thrilled by this unique opportunity which pays out $10,000 to anyone skilled enough to make the shot!

Taupō Mini Golf

This historic landmark is Taupō’s original 18-hole mini golf course located right on the edge of the lake, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and waters. Each hole is designed with unique obstacles and features such as ramps, water hazards, and jumps to challenge even the most experienced golfer. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, this course promises to be a fun and exciting way to spend your time in Taupō!

Steaming Bean Coffee Cart & 3 Little Kiwis Gelato

Taupō best and only lakefront coffee cart, the Steaming Bean has been a local landmark for many years. What better way to start (or finish) a scenic walk along the lakefront than with a steaming hot beverage, or perhaps this is the perfect stop along the way. In summer, complement your coffee with a scoop or two of gelato from the nearby 3 Little Kiwis cart.

SUP & Kayak Hire – Pure Kiwi Adventures

During the summer months Pure Kiwi Adventures offers SUP and kayak hire directly from Taupō’s most popular swimming beach on Lake Terrace. Priced from as little as $30 per hour, this is a great way to try your hand (and your balance) with a paddle in hand.

Two Mile Bay Sailing Centre

The Two Mile Bay Sailing Centre is a great place for travellers who want to learn how to sail or just get out on the water and explore. Rent sail boats and catamarans by the hour, or stick with the standard SUP or kayak hire instead. The Sailing Centre has been upgraded and expanded in recent years to include heaps of outdoor seating, lounges and bean bags, to enjoy its excellent coffee, pizzas and ever-expanding menu. There’s also a licensed bar and live music every week. Plus, it’s 100% dog friendly (even indoors) which gives it my tick of approval!

Play N Up Flyboard

Enjoy the feel of fresh air and water zooming past on Lake Taupō’s only Flyboard while you soar up to heights of 20 feet above the lake in a truly unique (and rather science fiction-y) experience. Feel the adrenaline rush as you flip, twist and turn while propelling yourself through the air with a jet-powered board attached to your feet. Not for you? That’s ok too. Spectators are always welcome!

Taupō Pedal Boats

With Taupō Pedal Boat hire you can enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of the lake while also getting a great workout. These comical vehicles come in two-seat and four-seat options, meaning plenty of fun for the whole family. Pedal as fast or as slow as you like to go as far as you dare, the lake is your oyster!

📸 Aratiatia Rapids & Dam

aratiatia rapids lookout walk
Looking back to the Aratiatia Dam from the scenic viewpoint.

The Aratiatia Rapids and Dam is a breathtaking sight to behold and should not be missed for anyone travelling from Taupō to Rotorua. Located off State Highway 5 on Aratiatia Road, this manmade wonder features an impressive dam which controls the flow of water spilling from Lake Taupō and down the Waikato River. At 10am, 12pm, 2pm (and in summer, 4pm) every day (time your departure accordingly), the gates open and send a huge surge of water flowing down into the canyon below, creating a series of spectacular rapids and providing visitors with a truly remarkable spectacle. Watch the release from the road bridge, or take a short 5 minute walk to the rapids viewpoint.

Admission Fee: FREE
Opening Hours: Dam releases 10am, 12pm, 2pm. Extra opening at 4pm in summer.

📸 Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave

Orakei Korako Geothermal Park is one of the more unique natural wonders along the journey from Taupō to Rotorua. In a landscape which is full of volcanic craters and thermal vents, Orakei Korako features New Zealand’s only geothermal cave, one of only two known geothermal caves in the world! But the wonders don’t stop there. The site has been touted as the best thermal area in New Zealand and rightly so with up to 23 naturally active geysers in the complex and perhaps the largest silica terraces remaining in the world today (since the destruction of the famous Pink & White Terraces at Mt Tarawera in 1886). Bring your camera and some sturdy (covered) walking shoes, a full tour of this landmark will take 2 hours.

Admission Fee: NZD47 (adults). NZD21 (children).
Opening Hours: Every day (excl. Christmas) from 8am to 4pm.

📸 Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland

(Photo by Sébastien Goldberg on Unsplash)

Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a highly-rated geological wonder, located back on State Highway 5 about 25 minutes from Rotorua. One of New Zealand’s most colourful geothermal attractions, this site sits atop one of the largest geothermal areas in the country and on the historic site of an ancient mud volcano. Boasting the usual geothermal features of steam vents, mud pools and geysers, a visitor favourite is the colourful Champagne Pool so-named because of the effect of carbon dioxide gas which keeps the water bubbling like a glass of champagne.

Admission Fee: NZD32.50 (adults), NZD11 (children). Family packages available.
Opening Hours: Friday to Tuesday from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

📸 Lady Knox Geyser

(Photo by Janna Peat on Unsplash)

The Lady Knox Geyser is an incredible sight to behold, located at the Wai-O-Tapu thermal wonderland facility approximately 25 minutes south of Rotorua. This geyser is one of the only in the world that is guaranteed to erupt on time (10.15am daily) because it can be triggered by adding a surfactant to the vent which causes the surface tension of the water to break. With a potential to erupt up to 20 metres in good conditions it attracts the crowds, so you’ll need to arrive in plenty of time to see it. It’s a short drive from the main visitor centre, and you’ll need to buy your ticket first, so I recommend arriving 20-30 minutes beforehand to secure a carpark and a seat.

Admission Fee: Free With Wai-O-Tapu Admission.
Opening Hours: Geyser eruption daily at 10.15am.

📸 Wai-O-Tapu Mud Pool

If you want to experience the wonder of Wai-O-Tapu but don’t want to pay the admission charges (although it is well worth it to explore the park) then head to the Wai-O-Tapu mud pool instead. Located just off Wai-O-Tapu Loop road it’s completely free to see, and is just a short stop off the main route. Experience the telltale sulphuric smell and pop of the mud as it boils and bubbles away in a large crater, surrounded by the hint of native bush in a small scalded crater. A short walk actually gives you a pretty good view and will wow the kids. Admission free.

Admission Fee: FREE
Opening Hours: Daily, 24 hours.

📸 Kerosene Creek

(Photo by Linde Lanjouw on Unsplash).

Kerosene Creek is naturally heated stream and waterfall located just off State Highway 5 just a short drive south of rainbow Mountain. Its clear waters are geothermally warmed by a hot spring deep beneath the Earth’s surface and surrounded by lush green ferns and native vegetation for privacy. Best of all, it’s completely free to enjoy making it perhaps one of the best free attractions on the drive from Taupō to Rotorua. Hot pools such as this are known for their healing and therapeutic properties but make sure not to put your head under the water. This site is not monitored or well-lit, so visit during the daytime and take all your valuables with you.

Admission Fee: FREE
Opening Hours: Daily, 24 hours (but daylight recommended).

📸 Rainbow Mountain

rainbow mountain crater taupo to rotorua
The steaming cliffs and craters of Rainbow Mountain at the Scenic Reserve.

Mount Kakaramea (or Rainbow Mountain) is located directly on State Highway 5 just by the intersection with State Highway 38. Meaning ‘mountain of coloured earth’ this is one of the only geothermally active mountains in New Zealand and although it’s cooled substantially in recent years there’s still plenty of evidence left of its violent volcanic past. Particularly spectacular is the abundance of native vegetation here which is unique to geothermal areas. Explore the mountain with either a short walk to the two main craters set against a backdrop of the red, white and brown steaming cliffs, or take the longer 1.5 hour climb to the summit for sweeping views over the Central Plateau. Parking limited.

Admission Fee: FREE
Opening Hours: Daily, 24 hours (but daylight recommended).

📸 Waimangu Volcanic Valley

As the world’s youngest geothermal system, Waimangu Volcanic Valley is a relatively new attraction to the Taupō Volcanic Zone and offers unique geological features including craters, hot springs, and fumaroles. It’s the only geothermal park in New Zealand which remains unaltered by man, due to its importance as a scientific research area following the 1886 Tarawera eruption which created it. There are plenty of options available to explore this unique area including hiking trails and a volcanic boat tour. For the full experience, allow 3-4 hours to walk the full Waimangu hiking trail past famous Frying Pan lake and Inferno Crater to the jetty at Lake Rotomahana where you’ll board a boat to explore geothermally active bays and rediscover the famous Pink & White Terraces (destroyed by the Mt Tarawera eruption). Return to the carpark by shuttle bus.

Admission Fee: Self-guided hiking tour from NZD44 (adults), All-inclusive hiking & boat tour from NZD89 (adults).
Opening Hours: Daily from 8.30am.

📸 Te Pā Tū Maori Village

Te Pā Tū Māori Village (formerly known as Tamaki Māori Village) is the only cultural stop on the drive between Taupō and Rotorua. Sharing Māori history, traditions, and future aspirations across four hours of celebration and feasting, this twilight and evening experience offers visitors the chance to experience traditional Māori culture up close and personal, complete with a traditional welcoming ceremony (pōwhiri), kapa haka performance (traditional stories taught through dancing and chanting) in the natural forest amphitheatre, followed by a traditional and locally-sourced meal prepared in customary form and enjoyed al fresco (if weather permits) or in the wharekai (traditional dining hall).

Admission Fee: NZD250 (adults), NZD105 children. Family packages available.
Opening Hours: Experiences start at 6.15pm daily.

📸 Secret Spot Hot Tubs Rotorua

Forest bathing at its finest, Secret Spot Hot Tubs just outside of Rotorua offers visitors an opportunity to sit back and relax in cozy cedar hot tubs filled with spring-sourced and heated water from a local aquifer amongst a lush native New Zealand bush setting. The hot tubs make a perfect spot for soaking tired muscles after an adventure-filled day on the biking and hiking trails or for soaking in the nighttime tranquillity of the forest at dusk. The secluded setting makes it ideal for couples who want to enjoy a romantic evening, or small groups to sit back and relax after a long day of sightseeing. Drinks can be delivered directly to the hot tub, and there is also a well-equipped cafe and bar on-site in a delightful garden setting which also hosts live outdoor music most Saturdays.

Admission Fee: from NZD39 (1 person) per session.
Opening Hours: Open 9am to 10pm daily. Last booking 9pm.

📸 Mountain Bike Rotorua

Gateway to gateway to both Whakarewarewa and Redwood Forests as well as the Skyline Gravity Park (the world’s first gondola-accessed MTB park), Mountain Bike Rotorua is your one-stop shop for exploring the tracks and trails of the Rotorua region. Run by a team of local and passionate professionals, you can rest assured you’ll be well looked after whatever your age and experience levels. With bikes available for hire, and plenty of local advice available, this is a great place for any keen adventure enthusiast to stop on their visit to Rotorua.

📸 Te Puia

A stop at Te Puia is an absolute must for any visitor to New Zealand, let alone Rotorua. Featuring the largest naturally-active geyser in the southern hemisphere, the Pohutu geyser, Te Puia has been a longstanding tourist attraction in Rotorua for decades. Although there are plenty of geothermal attractions to enjoy on your guided tour, a host of new experiences have also been added including demonstrations from traditional carvers and weavers at the on-site NZ Māori Arts & Crafts Institute, and getting up close and personal with New Zealand’s most famous bird, the kiwi, at the brand new Kiwi Conservation Centre. Although daytime tours are popular, I highly recommend experiencing a nighttime Te Pō Indigenous Tour which features a traditional buffet and Māori kapa haka performance in addition to a nighttime tour of the park and its famous geyser.

Admission Fee: Day tours from NZD75 (adults), Night tours from NZD144 (adults). Family packages available.
Opening Hours: Daily from 9am to 10pm.

📸 Rotorua Redwoods Park

Finish your drive from Taupō to Rotorua with a trip to the Rotorua Redwoods Park. This 5,600 hectare park consists of towering Californian Coast Redwood trees (amongst other species), providing visitors with a peaceful atmosphere to explore on foot or on two wheels, alone, or with the extended family and four-legged friends. Visitors can take advantage of the vast network of tracks and trails in the park ranging from short and easy strolls to longer multi-hour adventures. A popular attraction in the park is the Treewalk, a 700m suspended walkway enjoyed either during the day or spectacularly illuminated at night. For the more adventurous, perhaps try Redwoods Altitude, a guided treetop adventure taking you up to 25 metres into the canopy where you’ll climb and zipline your way through the treetops on an exhilarating course.

Admission Fee: Park entry FREE, Treewalk from NZD40 (adults), Altitude from NZD139 (adults).
Opening Hours: Park gates open 9am to 10pm

Taupō to Rotorua: Suggested 1-Day Trip Itinerary

Because there’s so much to see and do along the way, you probably won’t have time to squeeze it all in. So here’s my suggested itinerary for how to see as many of the top sights along the drive from Taupō to Rotorua in a single day.

Note: Items marked with (**) could be skipped if you need to make up some time.

1-Day Driving Itinerary – Taupō to Rotorua
8AM – Depart Taupō Accommodation
drive 10 mins
8.15AM – Huka Falls Short Walk to Upper Lookout (30 mins)
drive – 10 mins
9AM – Breakfast at Lava Glass Cafe (45 mins)
drive – 5 mins
**10AM – Aratiatia Dam Opening (30 mins)
drive – 25 mins
11AM – Orakei Korako Geothermal Park & Cave (2 hours)
drive – 30 mins
1.30PM – Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland Short Walk (1.5 hours)¹
drive – 5 mins
**3.15PM – Quick Dip at Kerosene Creek (30 mins)
drive – 5 mins
3.50PM – Rainbow Mountain Scenic Reserve (30 mins)
drive – 15 mins
4.45PM – Waimangu Volcanic Valley Highlights Walk (1 hour)
drive – 10 mins
6PM – Te Pā Tū (4 hours)
drive – 15 mins
10.30PM – Arrive Rotorua Accommodation²

¹ If you need to make up some time (or save some money), you could just visit the Wai-O-Tapu Mudpool instead of doing the full tour. This will save you about an hour if you’re running short on time or would rather spend some more time soaking at Kerosene Creek.

² Make sure to arrange a late check-in with your Rotorua accommodation as you won’t be arriving until well after 10pm!

Self Drive in Your Own Car or Hire a Rental Car

The best way to complete the trip from Taupō to Rotorua is by self-driving in your own car or hiring a rental car. Self-driving will allow you to choose your own route and explore attractions along the way at your own pace.

Although there are buses that operate along this route, most of them are point-to-point services, not tourist services which stop and wait whilst you explore the attractions.

If you don’t have your own private vehicle, I recommend renting a car with Discover Cars. They have a wide range of cars available for hire, and they offer easy booking with free cancellation and 24/7 support.

If you’re travelling in a motorhome, bear in mind that this is a popular tourist driving route and you’ll come across a lot of other motorhomes and campervans along the way. The larger tourist sites (such as Wai-O-Tapu and Te Puia) have plenty of parking for motorhomes and caravans, but smaller sites (such as Rainbow Mountain and Kerosene Creek) have smaller carparks. Be prepared to change your plans accordingly.

You’ll generally pay less for a bike with hardtail suspension, versus a bike with dual or full suspension. Some companies offer 2 hour hire as a cheaper option for the budget conscious, but 4 hour (1/2 day) and 8 hour (full dire) hires are more common.

Although most bike hire companies will provide basic safety equipment like a helmet, spare tubes and a pump included in the hire price, bike rack hire or shuttle transport to/from your preferred trail will come at an extra cost. The cheapest shuttles start from as little as NZD35 per person, but prices vary wildly depending on the distance you need to travel.

Some of the larger bike hire companies around Lake Taupō (such as Taupo Kayaking Adventures, FourB and Tongariro Mountain Bikes) also offer multi-day hire and guided tour options for specific trails. Again, the prices for these services vary depending on your needs so make sure to contact the hire companies directly for more information.

Kinloch Bike Hire

Due to Kinloch’s proximity to popular trailheads for the Great Lake Trail (i.e. the Kinloch to Kawakawa Bay Track “K2K”, and Whakaipo to Kinloch Track “W2K”), many Taupō-based mountain bike hire companies also hire bikes and offer shuttles out to Kinloch. Contact the individual providers to find out more about bike hire and shuttles to Kinloch.

During the busier summer months, FourB Pop Up Bike Hire Kinloch has previously operated from the shelter at the Kinloch Domain carpark. It’s not clear whether this service has continued in recent years due to Covid, so get in touch with FourB directly if you’re interested in using this service.

Known as one of the North Island’s most popular adventure tourism destinations, Taupō is renowned for its tranquil lakeside setting. And there’s no better way to make the most of the peace and quiet (without sacrificing comfort or convenience) than with a glamping Taupō holiday!

I’ve been a Taupō local for 20 years, and I’ve only recommended the glamping spots I know can offer the best of what Taupō has to offer with minimal impact.

What is glamping?

The word “glamping” is a combination of the words “glamorous” and “camping”. It’s a type of luxury camping that combines the traditional pared-down outdoor experience with modern luxuries and comforts.

Unlike traditional camping, glamping typically includes a range of luxury amenities such as proper beds, running water, electricity, air conditioning & heating, and private bathrooms. It’s common for modern glamping retreats to be upmarket and well-appointed, including unique features like fire pits, outdoor bath and hot tubs and even host-provided meals.

Glamping offers a unique experience that allows you to enjoy the outdoors without having to sacrifice comfort and luxury. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or an adventure with friends, glamping can provide the perfect balance of nature and modern amenities.

What’s great about it?

As a long-time camper, I know how harsh camping can be. Sharing a communal bathroom, sleeping on the ground, and having limited cooking facilities can really dampen the otherwise restful experience of being close to mother nature.

Glamping is an increasingly popular way to enjoy the outdoors without sacrificing comfort. It’s a great option for those who want to experience nature, but don’t necessarily want to rough it in a traditional camping situation.

Depending on where you want to go, you may have the option of luxury tents or yurts, handcrafted cabins or even treehouses for a unique outdoor experience that offers many of the comforts of home. There are even glamp-sites that offer hot tubs and wifi access!

What are the downsides of glamping?

The biggest downside of glamping is that it can be quite expensive compared to traditional camping. Whereas you might pay less than $40 per night to camp at a holiday park, glamping may set you back hundreds of dollars per night. Depending on the location and facilities available, you could end up paying more than you would for a hotel stay!

Glamping isn’t as remote as traditional camping. For those seeking a more wilderness-style experience, they may be disappointed to find that glamping sites are often located near popular tourist locations and are more accessible than backcountry campsites. This has obvious benefits in terms of the provision of things like water, electricity and even wifi, but with those comforts, sacrifices must be made.

Finally, some may consider glamping too easy and lacking in the challenge that traditional camping offers. This is not necessarily a bad thing, however for those wanting an authentic nature experience, it can feel like “cheating”.

Final Thoughts – Glamping in Taupō

From the traditional setup of a luxurious canvas tent by the fireside on the banks of a meandering river, to the more modern eco off-grid retreats set amongst native bush, there are plenty of options for enjoying glamping in Taupō.

Stunning lake views, nature-inspired spaces, outdoor baths and hot tubs, and the lullaby of native birdsong characterise any glamping stay in Taupō, providing you with an unforgettable holiday immersed in the peace and tranquillity of nature.

Whether it’s just one night or a week-long stay, with this list of carefully researched glamping spots you can rest assured knowing you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable and enjoyable time away from home.

So if you’re looking for something completely different for your getaway this year, why not try out glamping in Taupō? You won’t regret it!
